The 2024 South Dakota Adventure

I tried to post our trip chronologically but can't,
so the posts go from last to first.
To start from the beginning, scroll down to
July 11th!

August 17-22

   The Journey Home...

Riding 2 Horses Ranch in Cheyenne

Spur Stables in Albuquerque

Treated ourselves to a room at the Best Western in Show Low
since no hookups at Torreon Equestrian Center where our horses spent the night.
Manager even arranged a parking for our LQ!

And we let someone else cook!

And...Home!

Happy Trails till our next Adventure!

  The 2024 South Dakota Adventure

August 10-17

 Aspen Meadows Ranch...Take 2

We just loved this Ranch so much here we are again!
The owners Lee Ann and Phill are amazing.
Would love more varied riding but the ambience makes up for it.
See my post from 7/16 to refresh your memory if necessary!

It was the last long stay of this Adventure.
Unfortunately my husband had a misunderstanding with his horse right after the last ride.
Ended up with a fractured metacarpal on his left hand!

 The 2024 South Dakota Adventure

August 4-10

Broken Arrow Horse Camp

Moved about 10 miles to a campground just southeast of Custer.
With a mix of equestrian and regular RV Sites, this is quite large.
Full hookups, good-sized sites, large barn with very roomy, covered stalls.
There is a laundry on site as well, and an extensive DVD library in the office. Very nice owners.

The only drawback is the trails from camp.
They all leave from one gate and follow a county road for a mile until you can get on a single track.
We were here 3 years ago and did more trails,
but had to follow the road and then ride under power lines. Not my favorite thing!
This week the weather was unpleasant as well. Cold and rainy.
We had one lovely day and did the only trail ride we really enjoy...The 3 Ponds Loop.

Took one day to check out the Motorcycle Rally in Custer.
It's Sturgis Week but there are thousands of bikers everywhere!

The 2024 South Dakota Adventure

July 22-August 4

Bridle Ridge Horse Camp

This is only 17 miles northwest of Custer from Aspen Meadows. It is probably our favorite campground. Good sized stalls in a large barn, good hay available, spacious RV parking, and a good Verizon signal for hot spot usage. They have also just extended their WiFi so it reached us in the campground. Lovely owners, friendly and accommodating camp hosts and hostesses.
Miles of varied trail riding. Secluded and very quiet, but not too far from Custer.

  New Barn

From what we understand, a local sculptor designed and built this mythological bird-like spirit of the North American indigenous peoples' history and culture. It's probably 10-15 feet tall.

Took a day off from riding and drove the Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park

6 mile Round Mountain Loop from camp
